How to complete LAC
How to complete LAC

These are instructions on how to complete Logical Access Control (LAC). This is the last step for a provider to register for EPCS.

Updated over 4 months ago

Logical Access Control (LAC) is the final security step in the registration process for Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS). Completing LAC is crucial for ensuring secure and authorized e-prescribing. You won't be able to use e-prescribing if this step isn't completed.

What is LAC?

LAC is a security step required to authorize a provider to prescribe controlled substances electronically. It verifies that the e-prescribing permissions are granted to the correct provider.

Who completes LAC?

The DrFirst Admin completes the steps below with the clinician prescribing controlled medications present. You should have designated a "DrFirst Admin" when you completed the DrFirst eRX Information form or Osmind Plus Features Registration form.

As a reminder, the DrFirst Admin:

  • Is a staff member, family member, friend, or colleague

  • Is over 18 years old

  • Does not have an NPI

Step-by-Step Instructions for the DrFirst Admin

The DrFirst Admin may or may not have an Osmind account, depending on if they are affiliated with the practice.

Scenario 1 - Practice Affiliation

The DrFirst Admin is part of the practice and has an Osmind account.

  1. The DrFirst Admin logs into their Osmind account.

  2. Select 'e-Prescribe' from the left menu.

Scenario 2 - Solo Provider Practice

The DrFirst Admin is not affiliated with the practice and does not have an Osmind account.

  1. The DrFirst Admin logs into the Rcopia website using the credentials provided by Osmind Support.

Whether you (the DrFirst Admin) are logged into Osmind or the Rcopia website, you will see a screen like this.

1. Go the the main (hamburger) menu on the top left corner.

2. Select Utilities.

3. Select Logical Access Control (LAC).

4. You will see a screen like this. Personal information has been hidden

5. Click the Active radio button for the prescriber to grant EPCS authorization.

6. Under Granting Administrator, the DrFirst Admin will enter their own first and last name as it appears on their user account.

8. Under Authorizing Prescriber, the administrator will populate the Enter NPI field with the provider's NPI number, then click Validate.

9. At this point, the Provider will either 1) complete the remaining fields, then click Authorize, or 2) share the following information with their DrFirst Admin, who will enter the information and click Authorize.

  • Choose a Device from list: This field should auto-populate all active registered tokens.

    • Please ensure the token being used is selected.

  • Enter the signing passphrase: The provider should have already set the signing passphrase (controlled substance password) during EPCS enrollment.

  • Enter the One Time Pin (OTP) from the selected token: This six-digit code generates every 30 seconds.

10. You will be redirected to a page that will prompt you to click Refresh. Doing so will reload the LAC page with the desired grant change(s) applied.

Note: If you receive the error "Your Logical Access Control session has ended. No changes were made" please repeat this process and be sure the Active button is selected in Step 4.

Congratulations, the EPCS grant has now been activated, and the provider can now start prescribing controlled substances electronically!

Provider not listed in LAC screen

Verify that the provider's EPCS status is "Enrolled."

What is the difference between a DrFirst Admin and an Office Admin/Osmind Staff?

The DrFirst Admin can authorize e-prescribing of controlled substances for providers. They must be registered as non-clinical staff or clinical staff in Osmind and over 18. You do not need an office admin to complete this process; anyone registered as staff and 18+ can be assigned as the LAC admin. If you are a solo practitioner without staff, you can temporarily invite a spouse, friend, or colleague into your practice to serve as admin for LAC purposes, and upon completion can be disabled.

When I try to validate the NPI, I receive the message, "Authentication failed. Access is denied"
